Ninth day: Lord, make me grateful for your goodness

Today’s Scripture

Jesus cured ten lepers but only one returned to thank him. Jesus was hurt, and asked: ‘Has no one returned to give thanks to God except this Samaritan?’
On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, they called out, saying, ‘Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!’ When he saw them, he said to them, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ And as they went, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, ‘Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?’ Then he said to him, ‘Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.’

( Luke 17:11-19 NRSV)

Eight day: Pray for the world that feels betrayed

Today’s Scripture

As his passion was beginning Jesus knew how it would devastate his disciples,
so he told Peter, ‘I have prayed for you.’ Peter found the strength to come through it and support the others.

‘Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.’ And he said to him, ‘Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death!’ Jesus said, ‘I tell you, Peter, the cock will not crow this day, until you have denied three times that you know me.’

Seventh day: God is close to all who are in any kind of need

Today’s Scripture

Jesus identified himself with those in need, and warned, ‘What you do to the least of these, who are members of my family, you do to me.’
“Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?” And the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”

Sixth day: ‘Caution, God at work!’

Today’s Scripture

Once Jesus cured a man on the Sabbath and he was criticised. He replied that he was only doing what he saw his Father doing.
Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise. The Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing; and he will show him greater works than these, so that you will be astonished. Indeed, just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomsoever he wishes. The Father judges no one but has given all judgement to the Son.’

Fifth day: Lord, help me to see you in people

Today’s Scripture

Jesus defined his mission in his hometown of Nazareth.
‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free.’
( Luke 4:18-19)

Fourth day: God meets me in all that happens to me!

Today’s Scripture

On their way to Emmaus the two disciples were talking about Jesus’ death, when Jesus himself joined them and walked with them, but they did not recognise him. Later they remembered, ‘Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us?’
Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?’ That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!’ Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Third day: Thank God for creation

Today’s Scripture

The Prophet Isaiah, like all the Prophets in a time when the people were low, celebrated God as creator of all, and saw God tenderly holding us by our right hand, saying: ‘Do not be afraid, for I will help you.’
For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, ‘Do not fear, I will help you.’

Second day: The Lord invites me to be his friend

Today’s Scripture

At the Last Supper Jesus gazed at the odd group he had gathered around him and spoke from his heart: ‘You are my friends!’
‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.

First day: God smiles on me

Today’s Scripture

‘Jesus looked at the rich young man and loved him.’
As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: “You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honour your father and mother.” ’ He said to him, ‘Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.’ Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, ‘You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’ When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, ‘How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!’
(Mark 10:17-23 NRSV)
